It has been challenging for landscape architects to understand, evaluate, and communicate quantifiable impacts of design. This panel explores landscape metrics in depth—their development, what they can measure, and best practices to assess climate resiliency, biodiversity, social equity, and carbon storage.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand how metrics in landscape architecture practice are used, developed, and adapted by designers.
Understand how biodiversity influences ecosystem function, how spatial patterns influence resilience, which metrics may predict sudden changes in system health, and current efforts in assigning biodiversity scores to a project.
Review a curated set of defensible and relatively easy-to-use metrics by which designers can assess project impacts in social, environmental, and economic categories.
Gain access to examples of successful metric use that can be adapted to multiple regions in North America.
