FRI-FS-12: Universal Design Auditing: An Immersive and Inclusive Introduction to Testing Site Accessibility

Visit several local sites to conduct Universal Design audits with local disabled community members. Session will emphasize discrepancies between accessible and inaccessible design and participants will learn about access issues through firsthand experiences shared by disabled community members, accessibility consultants, landscape architects, and designers.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Better understand Universal Design as it relates to landscape architecture, accessibility, and implications for improvements beyond the ADA, with consideration for lived experience.
  • Understand the effects of inaccessible designs for the disabled community and how to conduct a thorough access audit.
  • Learn firsthand about accessible and inaccessible design elements with disabled community members, and document an access audit through measurements, mapping, sketches, and photos.
  • Analyze the implications of design decisions and construction implementations in the field, by taking the opportunity to learn directly from disabled lived experience rather than assumptions or disability simulations.
