MON-B01: Unraveling Rural Myths: Strategies for Building Community and Investment in Rural Landscapes

Through the lens of community organizing, design, and fundraising, this session centers on relationship building in rural and Indigenous communities. It will explore methods of empowering people by creating an authentic design process, sustaining relationships, and applying a diverse approach toward funding projects in historically under-resourced areas.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Examine the complexity of rural communities and identify myths that have been perpetuated.
  • Explore opportunities for meaningful work in rural communities and the important role landscape architecture can play in bringing communities together to promote resilience.
  • Understand the value of long-term relationships with stakeholders and why clients, landscape architects, and funders should all embrace robust engagement processes.
  • Learn about strategies for developing a network of stakeholders to craft a more holistic approach to funding for projects
