MON-A02: When Communities are Patrons of Design

Landscape architects help communities visualize and plan for climate adaptation and resilience. What are practical ways designers can work with communities to secure resources that benefit the people in those neighborhoods? What are the expectations, risks, and return-on-investment factors shifting conventional practice toward relational work?

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the priorities of federal, state, and local programs that community-based-organizations can access to fund local climate resilience work.
  • Understand the priorities, patterns, and trends of philanthropic/private funds, and how community-based organizations can access these funds for climate resilience work.
  • Learn about case study examples and practice models that reset expectations about pre-design and relational work with communities.
  • Network with others in the room about advancing these ideas and building and deepening relationships between designers and social justice leaders.
