The session will critically explore the legacy of master planning in historically disinvested communities. Explore how to reimagine long-term planning as more just and equitable through the integration of creative engagement, education, and economic development programing. Participants will be asked to rethink the roles of landscape architects and planners on equitable planning and environmental justice-oriented projects.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the history of the Master Plan, traditional outcomes associated with this project type, and why Master Plans are challenging to do well in communities burdened by historic disinvestment.
Learn how to integrate engagement, education, and economic development programming initiatives into long-term planning projects to build trust, create community benefits, and promote equitable outcomes.
Identify the successes and challenges in the equitable engagement strategies shared, and determine how these strategies could be applied to other long-term plans.
Explore the evolving role of landscape architects and planners on equity-driven planning projects.
