SAT-C09: Family Friendly Cities: Crafting Great Urban Spaces for Kids, Teens, and Caregivers

How can we equitably design cities for families to thrive? In this session, learn from practitioners who are planning and designing urban spaces for kids, teens, and caregivers. Learn how planners and landscape architects are developing policies to support families, engaging youth in design processes, and ultimately building family-friendly cities.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand national and international best practices around making cities livable for urban families and inclusive of the diverse needs of children, youth, teens, and caregivers.
  • Explore how to authentically engage the voices of children, teens, and young caregivers in the planning and design of urban outdoor spaces.
  • Apply educational, cognitive, and child-development research to the contextual design of parks and playscapes that support the learning of physically and neurologically diverse children.
  • Expand the understanding of children’s outdoor environments beyond traditional schoolyards and playscapes to include playful and learning-rich streetscapes, intriguing and flexible spaces for family-friendly events, and comfortable spaces for teens.
