Throughout its 150-year history, Lakewood Cemetery has evolved its landscape and organization to serve the changing needs of the community. This session will cover projects and stories that showcase Lakewood’s landscape, while also discussing practices that challenge cemeteries’ traditional public role.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand historic Lakewood Cemetery as a landscape and a cemetery within the historical, cultural, and social context.
  • Understand liminal landscapes and spaces and how to design and program a liminal landscape.
  • Explore a non-profit organization’s role in providing space for healing, celebrating, and recreation; discuss the critical role Lakewood played during the pandemic that resulted in permanent increased shifts in visitorship and programs.
  • Explore how historic Lakewood Cemetery as an organization can keep pace and respond to change, including evolving community needs, emerging memorialization practices, and the desire for large scale communal events.
