FRI-FS-07: Still Here: Honoring Sacred Indigenous Landscapes on the Mississippi River

This is Dakota homeland, and cultural landscapes are woven throughout Mni Sota Makoce. Historic Fort Snelling, Wita Tanka , Indian Mounds, and Wakan Tipi offer powerful connections to the Mississippi River. We will explore natural, restored, and designed landscapes that convey deep and complex histories through tactile connections with the landscape.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognize the cultural context and history of Indigenous communities in the river valleys surrounding the Twin Cities.
  • Understand how elevating Indigenous sovereignty within the context of public client-led projects can positively transform design processes, decision-making structures, and engagement approaches.
  • Learn about two different partnership models with Indigenous collaborators and Tribal Nations and explore how those models informed design, restoration, planting, co-management strategies, and messaging.
  • Consider how various methods of interpretation, messaging, and storytelling impact the experience of place, build knowledge, and alter perspectives of sacredness and ownership.
