Visit two iconic public arts landscapes to gain insight into the design and implementation techniques for Walker Arts Center’s Wurtele Upper Garden and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. In addition, walk Loring Park and Loring Greenway to understand how this district of Minneapolis has attracted artists and residents to the area.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand how to collaborate with art, artists, and art organizations in the design of public landscapes.
Gain insight into the infrastructural challenges (and solutions) that informed these renovations, including roofdeck/structural landscapes, integrating storm water recapture and reuse, and soil compaction/subsidence.
Learn about integrating event programming for a variety of art, music, and cultural events into the design of these landscapes.
Explore the history of this part of Minneapolis’ parks system, including the development of Loring Park, Loring Greenway, and the Armory Gardens, the site of the current Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
